Car thieves may be thwarted by a new immobiliser that stops the car being started without an approved fingerprint scan.
The biometric security device is set to make sure car owners feel more secure about their vehicle as thieves have been getting around older immobiliser systems by stealing car keys to deactivate them.
Designed by Automotive Technology Research and Development in Coventry, the firm says the device can be fitted on any car and remains discrete as the only noticeable feature is a small touchpad on the dashboard.
Drivers can get a system which recognizes just their fingerprints, or add a number of other drivers whose biometric data also receive approval to start the engine.
Insurers approve of drivers taking extra care over their car’s security, either through biometric immobilisers or by simply keeping the car in a locked garage, which may result in them agreeing to reduce their insurance premium charges.
